Sophie Simard, Musical Director for Comox Valley Children’s Choir

Hometown: Quadra Island- a truly beautiful gem in the Discovery Islands.

3 words that best describe you: Enthusiastic, dedicated, passionate.

Last book you read (or are reading): Bow Grip by Ivan E Coyote

Celebrity crush: Denzal Sinclaire

First job: At my dad’s then café on Quadra island, slinging coffees!

All-time greatest movie or TV show: I grew up without TV, which is part of who I am … but I always watch every single BBC Documentary on nature (multiple times, because I fall asleep in two minutes every time).

Favourite place you’ve ever travelled to: Berlin and Amsterdam are tied … But wait, there was also Mexico City … Metropolitan centres filled with history, arts, culture, and human diversity feed the fire inside me!

Worst pet peeve: Children’s musical instrument toys that are out of tune. It’s best to just buy the real deal at a music store. Quality musical instruments can teach children to be mindful of their possessions and to preserve and repair them when needed, which helps to dismantle the throwaway culture we live in.

Best gift you’ve ever received: Music & poetry.

The song that best sums you up:  One Voice by the Wailin’ Jennys

Local business you admire: Nikkei Ramen-Ya

Most unusual thing you’ve ever eaten: When I was 12, I tried cold smoked shark at a New Year’s Eve dinner buffet & ball in Quebec City.

Craziest thing you’ve ever done: I was travelling in Europe alone. I decided to cross over to Spain from Portugal, all of a sudden. I took an evening train, and arrived in the middle of the night without a single word of Spanish under my belt and without guide books/maps/internet.

Best thing about your job: I guide children and youth to discover their musicality and help them share their joy of singing with our community! They are my constant teachers, and I am so grateful every day to have the privilege of hearing their little voices grow and shine.

Proudest achievement: Seeing the light on dark days. Finding a way to start today over again, every day.

Fears/phobias: Dogs I’m afraid of. Rats I can’t handle. I’m working on both … slowly!

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be? To cure all chronic illnesses & chronic pain.

Favourite item of clothing in your wardrobe: Jeans. Always jeans.

Who is most overpaid? Anyone who doesn’t consider donating or sharing something of themselves, their earnings, their time, or their gifts with the world.

The top thing on your bucket list: Move to a foreign land and immerse my family in a foreign language. It will probably be in sunny Okinawa, as my children’s heritage is partly from Japan and we plan to learn to speak Japanese.

One thing you’ll never do again: Eat at McDonald’s

Your perfect weekend: Coffee, muffin, and a walk outside to start the morning. Listening to music in the sun. Going to a rehearsal. Dinner out. Talking into the wee hours with close friends.

Life motto: My own metaphormake sweet music from your heart.

What do you wish we would have asked (and your answer)?

What’s your favourite food? CHOCOLATE of course!

Which album would you take to the end of the earth? Blue and Green by Miles Davis.
